Unbridled marks the eighth studio album from Pride Of Lions. Led by Jim Peterik and Toby Hitchcock, the band made its debut in 2003 with its self-titled album and has since become one of the most consistent names in the AOR scene.
The album opens with the thunderous guitar-driven title track. “Unbridled” is an energetic and confident introduction to a record that delivers twelve melody-rich songs firmly rooted in classic AOR. The opener immediately establishes the band’s trademark sound, combining driving rock guitars with memorable hooks. Listening to it brought back memories of the great AOR anthems of the 1980s, a feeling that becomes even stronger with the following track, “Edge of Forever.”
Beyond its musical strengths, “Edge of Forever” also carries an important lyrical message. The song reflects on the fragile state of our planet and the environmental challenges facing humanity. It portrays Earth as standing on the brink of collapse while simultaneously serving as a call to action, urging listeners to reverse the downward spiral before it is too late.
“1000 Long Goodbyes” is one of the more intriguing moments on the album. While its infectious melody gives it an upbeat feel, a subtle sense of melancholy runs beneath the surface, creating an appealing emotional contrast. With “What the Whole World Needs to Know,” Pride Of Lions shifts into ballad territory. The soulful arrangement provides a welcome change of pace and fits naturally within the album’s overall flow. “Hell or High Water” continues in a similar vein, followed by “Ride the Lightning”—clearly not a Metallica cover—which offers another restrained and melodic moment.
After this quieter stretch, the band turns the energy back up. “Lose Like a Winner” reignites the rock spirit with punchier guitars, although the band’s signature, melody-first approach remains the driving force behind the song.
Once again, Peterik and Hitchcock prove to be a highly effective songwriting partnership under the Pride Of Lions banner. Unbridled stays true to the band’s established formula, delivering classic AOR with unmistakable roots in the 1980s. The songwriting is polished and consistently well-crafted, but the album rarely ventures beyond its comfort zone. A few rougher edges, heavier moments, or unexpected twists could have added more variety and excitement. As it stands, Unbridled is an enjoyable collection of well-written songs, even if it lacks the truly unforgettable highlights that would elevate it from a solid release to an exceptional one.
