Live report LEFT TO DIE & LIVLØS, Betty, Hamburg – August 12th, 2026

Today, you could spend your evening in Hamburg watching a total solar eclipse. After all, it’s the first one the city has seen in 24 years, and it’ll be quite a while before the next one comes around. But there’s a good reason worth making the pilgrimage to: Betty’s in Hamburg, where something every bit as exciting is about to unfold. Left To Die are in town to pay tribute to the sound of Death live on stage. So, with all due respect to the thrills of the universe, we’re happy to skip the eclipse and head toward the Reeperbahn instead to appreciate the sound of Death.

Before that can happen, though, Livløs have to take the stage. Hailing from Aarhus, Denmark, the band delivers a dark blend of blackened death metal and is a pretty fitting choice for the opening slot. Understandably, much of the set focuses on their third album. Released in 2024, it isn’t exactly fresh off the press anymore, yet only a handful of people in the room seem to be familiar with the band. The venue is still relatively empty at this point, which is hardly surprising given the beautiful weather outside. Livløs, however, couldn’t care less.

The Danes hit the gas right from the start, hammering one song after another into the room with plenty of force. And little by little, more metalheads make their way up the stairs to the first floor of Betty’s.

Livløs deliver a rock-solid performance, and by the time they reach their final song, “Endless Majesty,” the crowd is impressively clapping along. Not a bad result for a band competing with both a beautiful summer evening and a total solar eclipse for people’s attention. When the metal wins that battle, you know you’ve done something right.

When Left To Die take the stage, the room is noticeably more crowded. Hamburg clearly has a solid fan base when it comes to old-school death metal. And that’s one of the great things about club shows: as a fan, you’re not only able to stand right in front of the stage close to your idols, you also get to see the band itself getting involved and making sure everything is in place for a great show.

Once the short intro “E5150” fades out, Left To Die launch into a classic Mantas track, “Legion of Doom.” There’s no hesitation from the crowd tonight, and the atmosphere goes from zero to a hundred in no time. Of course, the songs themselves play a big part, but so does the fact that these guys know exactly what they’re doing. They deliver the classics, including “Scream Bloody Gore,” with plenty of conviction and a genuine feel for the material.

Alongside former Death members Terry Butler and Rick Rozz, the current lineup features Matt Harvey and Gus Rios, and together they turn up the heat for the Hamburg death metal faithful.

Naturally, songs like “Witch of Hell,” “Death by Metal,” and “Zombie Ritual” unleash plenty of unrestrained enthusiasm from the crowd, and things get even louder when the band returns for the encore. “Pull the Plug” is not only a sing along. Fans yell the chorus loudly as like being a big death metal choir. With “Evil Dead,” the band brings the night to a fitting close.

Even though the show is over after just 65 minutes, the fans have gotten exactly what they came for. Left To Die breathe new life into these Death classics, while the loud “Chuck! Chuck! Chuck!” chants are a reminder that, 25 years after his passing, this exceptional musician is still very much present in the hearts of metal fans and these songs are his legacy.
