Review KONVENT “Firesky”

Since 2015, Konvent have been devoted to doom metal, delivering it with plenty of weight and conviction while folding in death-metal growls and atmospheric black-metal elements. Right from their debut, the four-piece made it clear that extreme metal was more than just a passing interest. That commitment remains intact today.

With Firesky, the Danish band return with their third album, and it marks another intense chapter in Konvent’s evolution. Across five tracks, they bring down a wall of sound, shifting between crushing heaviness and atmospheric passages that feel almost fragile. Those quieter moments never last for long, though. Sooner or later, another eruption follows, pouring riff-heavy lava across the landscape.

The band’s approach is easy to hear on a track like “Scorning.” It begins quietly, with a touch of melancholy that gives the song an almost cinematic quality. There is a sense of calm, but something unsettling lurks underneath. As the drums gradually enter the picture, “Scorning” slowly takes shape as a heavy doom-metal piece. When the first growls break through the relative calm, it becomes obvious that this is no love song.

Rikke Emilie List’s vocals give the track much of its character, pushing the song deeper into despair and gloom. There is little room for anything cheerful or carefree here. Instead, “Scorning” reflects the weight of existence itself, turning that feeling into a slow-moving wall of sound.

The dragging pace adds another layer to the track, creating an interesting contrast with the almost elegant melodies of “In the Unknown.” Then come the growling vocals, reminding us that Konvent are firmly rooted in death and black metal as well as doom. The song works its way into the listener’s subconscious with a hypnotic persistence, and despite its twelve-minute runtime, it never feels stretched.

A comparatively peaceful middle section gives the listener some breathing room, yet even here Konvent keep that underlying sense of unease alive. The tension never completely disappears. It simply waits beneath the surface.

The title track deserves a mention as well. Featuring Mai Soon Young Øvlisen, it adds another vocal texture to the song, giving the track a different shade without taking away from Konvent’s core sound.

Throughout Firesky, Konvent build songs with a weight that can feel almost physical. It is like standing in front of a massive wall of riffs—a death-doom monolith with nowhere obvious to go but straight through it. Each track slowly hammers away at the listener, drawing them into a dark and hypnotic atmosphere.

There is nothing rushed about Firesky. Konvent understand the power of letting riffs breathe, letting drums drag and letting tension build. The result is an album that pulls the listener down into its own heavy world, one slow step at a time.
