Tonight, the road takes me to Hamburg’s Barclays Arena, where Amy Lee and Evanescence are set to take the stage. The band is currently touring across Europe and the UK, with a stop in the autumn city on the Elbe. Poppy is along for the ride as an additional special guest, while Nova Twins have... One evening after Devin Townsend brought a stripped-down solo performance to Hamburg’s Markthalle, I’m back at the same venue. This time, though, the setup couldn’t be more different. The chairs from the previous night have disappeared, the room is ready for a standing crowd, and an interesting package is about to hit the stage. Metal... Continue Reading →
Devin Townsend is in town. The first of his three German shows takes place tonight at Hamburg’s Markthalle, and two words in the tour announcement immediately stand out: solo and seated. Tonight’s performance is part of the Metamorphosis tour, and anyone expecting the full Devin Townsend experience—with a band, massive production, and all the bells and whistles—will quickly realize that... Today, you could spend your evening in Hamburg watching a total solar eclipse. After all, it’s the first one the city has seen in 24 years, and it’ll be quite a while before the next one comes around. But there’s a good reason worth making the pilgrimage to: Betty’s in Hamburg, where something every bit... Continue Reading →
Early August also means one thing again this year: Elbriot in Hamburg. The open-air festival at Hamburg’s Grossmarkt has been a fixture on the city’s metal calendar for quite some time now, and once again, it opens its gates for another day of roaring live music. It would be hard to ask for better conditions... Continue Reading →

The festival kicks off with a trio of bands—Edelgift!, Der Butterwegge, and Elfmorgen—before German punk veterans Rantanplan take the stage. With Rantanplan, ska punk returns to MBOA. The band delivers a tight 40-minute set and... Continue Reading →
Today, we’re visiting the Match Börner Open Air in Norderstedt, part of the greater Hamburg metropolitan area, for the very first time. While its early editions featured a diverse lineup blending pop, rock, and heavier acts, the festival has since developed a... Continue Reading →

Today, we're taking a closer look at Milli Pilli, Muffi Puffi, Riffi Raffi, Komppi Momppi, and Mr. Heavysaurus. Together, these larger-than-life dinosaur and dragon characters make up Heavysaurus, a band with a simple but ambitious mission: introducing the next generation to the world of heavy metal. The story of Heavysaurus began in 2009 when Thunderstone... Continue Reading →

If you visit Markus' Heavy Music Blog regularly, you'll know that every now and again, the focus shifts beyond the world of metal. Tonight is one of those moments, as German hip-hop pioneer Thomas D. is playing a show at the Mojo Club in Hamburg. A few weeks ago, the word acrobat released a new... Continue Reading →
Cemetery Skyline isn’t a band that plays many shows, which is of course due to the various other commitments and obligations of the five band members plus the initial idea of recording just one album without playing live at all. Mikael Stanne, Markus Vanhala, Santeri Kallio, Victor Brandt and Vesa Ranta formed Cemetery Skyline in... Continue Reading →
A Scandinavian metal package will stop at Hamburg's Gruenspan tonight, bringing some raw death and black metal to town. Swedish metal veterans Hypocrisy are touring with none other than the Norwegian black metal force Abbath as a special guest.
