Live report DEVIN TOWNSEND, Markthalle, Hamburg – September 15th, 2026

Devin Townsend is in town. The first of his three German shows takes place tonight at Hamburg’s Markthalle, and two words in the tour announcement immediately stand out: solo and seated.

Tonight’s performance is part of the Metamorphosis tour, and anyone expecting the full Devin Townsend experience—with a band, massive production, and all the bells and whistles—will quickly realize that this is a different kind of show.

That doesn’t mean the evening comes up short on Townsend. Quite the opposite. Just like his An Evening With Devin Townsend tour in 2019, tonight is a seated affair. And honestly, I can’t remember ever seeing the Markthalle with rows of chairs instead of the usual packed standing crowd. Once everyone has found their seat, there’s a definite sense of anticipation in the room.

At exactly 8:00 p.m., Townsend walks onto the stage alone, armed with nothing more than his acoustic guitar. But rather than jumping straight into a song, he starts with a short introduction—a little pre-show conversation that sets the tone for the evening. Then he turns to a flip chart and spends a few minutes creating a small drawing.

It’s apparently become something of a tour ritual, with a new piece of artwork being added at every show. The interesting question is what happens when all those individual drawings are eventually put together.

Then it’s time for Funeral, delivered with plenty of emotion and serving as the perfect doorway into a show that mixes music, biography, storytelling, and comedy. Tonight’s recurring themes are change, fear, and love, and in one way or another, they keep finding their way back into the conversation throughout the roughly two-and-a-half-hour performance.

The musical core of the set is spread across Townsend’s entire career. Strapping Young Lad, The Devin Townsend Project, and even Punky Brüster contribute songs to the evening, creating a broad snapshot of his musical journey rather than focusing on one particular chapter.

And then there are the snippets. Some songs appear only briefly, woven into the stories Townsend tells between the full performances. He talks about how certain pieces came together, shares personal memories, and opens a few doors into the life behind the music. Naturally, there’s plenty of humor along the way—and a healthy dose of self-irony.

Whether it’s a stripped-down take on a classic like “Love?” or Townsend simply holding the room with one of his stories, the audience is fully engaged. There are plenty of smiles and laughs, familiar songs are greeted with enthusiastic “yeahs,” and the applause keeps coming. Townsend even admits that accepting that kind of response from an audience was something he had to learn.

And that pretty much sums up the evening. This was Devin Townsend without the wall of sound, the full band, or the big production. Instead, the focus was on the artist, his songs, his stories, and the people sitting in front of him. Tonight felt genuinely intimate. Music was at the heart of it, but it was only one part of a show that also revealed Townsend as open, approachable, emotional, funny, and very human.

Tonight was just Devin Townsend, mainly an acoustic guitar, a room full of fans—and a couple of hours that felt like a conversation with someone you’ve known for years.
