Review ERIK GRÖNWALL “Bad Bones”

Erik Grönwalls new album, “Bad Bones” is about to be released. The Swedish singer first found success when he won Swedish Idol in 2009. This marked the beginning of a career that has seen him release two solo albums, both of which achieved great chart success in his home country.

These releases served as a springboard for Grönwall to join H.E.A.T., and later American hard rockers Skid Row. Grönwall was fighting leukaemia, and while he was focusing on his health, he left Skid Row. With “Bad Bones” Grönwall celebrates his return with a new solo album.

“Bad Bones” features ten new songs from the Swedish singer. Hard rock is the driving force behind songs that sometimes also have an AOR feel. “Praying for a Miracle” is one of these tunes, with a great melody in the chorus and a throbbing beat that adds dynamics to this tuneful rock song.

However, the album opens with a song called “Born to Break”, one of the three lead singles. This song highlights the great versatility of Grönwall’s voice. This pulsating track leads seamlessly into the rocking title track. Grönwall strikes the balance between well-crafted melodies and rougher edges. The album is never overly sweet, but always spreads a catchy groove.

The obligatory ballad is actually a power ballad called “Who’s the Winner”, showcasing a singer who is extremely talented. While the song itself might not be a wow moment, it showcases Grönwall’s impressive vocal abilities.

Most of the songs on “Bad Bones” are thumping rock tunes, such as “Lost for Life” and the pounding “Save Me”, which is driven by the heartbeat of rock ‘n’ roll. “Twisted Lullaby” is another powerful rock song, although it lacks a certain something. “Hell & Back” has a darker vibe and is a counterpart to the positive energy of most of the other songs.

It’s impossible to stand still while “How High” unfolds its captivating charm, leading seamlessly into “Written in the Scars”. The latter is the final track on the album and starts as a piano-based ballad. As the title suggests, it is a very emotional and touching finale.

“Bad Bones” showcases Grönwall’s great vocal range. Having lent his voice to bands such as H.E.A.T. and Skid Row, Grönwall’s solo album allows him to continue exploring his musical ideas and realise his musical vision. “Bad Bones” is a well-crafted hard rock album that includes all the features such a release needs. Thunderous rock songs and soulful moments are interwoven. Leather and denim moments are followed by heart-warming tunes, all held together by Grönwall’s excellent vocals. He is one of the best singers in this genre, and this solo album cements his standing in the world of hard rock.
