Review VARIOUS ARTISTS “The Transformers – The Movie, The Soundtrack, The Reformatted Edition”

When The Transformers: The Movie premiered in theaters in 1986, it did not become the box-office success many had hoped for. The soundtrack also fell short of commercial expectations, despite featuring several memorable songs that would later develop a loyal following.

Now, nearly 40 years later, Reigning Phoenix Music and Hasbro revisit the classic with The Transformers: The Movie – The Soundtrack: The Reformatted Edition. Arriving this summer, the album breathes new life into the original soundtrack while remaining faithful to its roots.

The album follows the same track sequence as the 1986 release, but every song has been produced by Matt LaPlant and remixed/remastered by Zeuss, giving the material a fuller, more contemporary sound. In addition, several guest vocalists contribute fresh performances that add a new dimension to these familiar tracks.

The album opens with “The Touch,” once again featuring Stan Bush, who also sang the original version. While staying true to the classic, this updated recording sounds tighter, punchier, and benefits from the enhanced production.

The first guest appearance comes on “Instruments of Destruction,” where Francesco Cavalieri of Wind Rose delivers a strong vocal performance that gives the song a slightly rougher edge while respecting the spirit of the original.

The instrumental score selections remain an important part of the album, with “Death of Optimus Prime” standing out as one of the soundtrack’s most cinematic moments. Another highlight is “Nothin’s Gonna Stand in Our Way,”featuring an excellent vocal performance from Sebastian Bach. Meanwhile, Brittney Slayes of Unleash the Archers adds both power and melody to “The Transformers (Theme),” giving the iconic song an enjoyable ’80s-inspired metal flavor.

One of the album’s strongest moments is “Hunger,” featuring Marc Osegueda (Death Angel / Kerry King) on vocals. Hearing the Death Angel frontman in a more hard rock-oriented setting is an interesting change of pace, and his commanding performance injects the song with renewed energy. The result recalls the classic spirit of bands such as Twisted Sister and Alice Cooper while remaining true to the song’s original identity.

Whether The Transformers: The Movie – The Soundtrack: The Reformatted Edition will achieve greater commercial success than the original remains to be seen. What is certain, however, is that this updated version delivers considerably more impact. With its improved production and carefully chosen guest performances, it offers both longtime Transformers fans and classic hard rock listeners a fresh reason to revisit these songs.
