Review TESLA “Homage”

After releasing Shock in 2019, Tesla took their time before returning with a new studio album. Seven years after their last collection of original material, the band is back with Homage – an album that lives up to its name in every possible way.

The title couldn’t be more fitting. Homage is a tribute to the songs and artists that shaped Tesla’s musical identity. Featuring classics from the ’60s and ’70s – from The Beatles and Queen to Etta James – the album honors the roots of rock and blues while reminding listeners where the band’s own musical journey began.

Jeff Keith’s distinctive voice gives each song a unique personality. Rather than simply recreating these classics, Tesla approaches them with genuine respect, staying faithful to the originals while adding their unmistakable sound and feel. It’s a delicate balance, and the band pulls it off beautifully.

The overall atmosphere immediately brought back memories of Five Man Acoustical Jam, including Tesla’s excellent rendition of “We Can Work It Out.” In many ways, Homage also feels like a natural continuation of the Real to Reelalbums, but this time the focus shifts even more toward the roots of rock than the band’s hard rock and metal influences.

Acoustic guitars play a major role throughout the record, giving every performance a warm, organic feel. Each track is a pleasure to listen to, filled with heartfelt musicianship and an obvious appreciation for the music that inspired Tesla in the first place. The performances are both intense and captivating, proving that great songs never lose their power.

Homage is much more than another covers album. It is a sincere and passionate tribute to some of rock music’s greatest artists and songs. More importantly, it reminds us why these classics have stood the test of time. For fans of Tesla, classic rock, and authentic performances that come straight from the heart, Homage is a genuine treat for the ears.
