DVD review STEVE HACKETT ‘Genesis Revisited Band & Orchestra: Live at Royal Festival Hall’

(*/10) As part of the ‘Genesis Revisited tour’ Steve Hackett and band mates played a show at Royal Festival Hall in London on October 4th, 2018. Thirteen beautiful songs filled the venue that night, a show split into two parts.

Hackett’s years with legendary Genesis have been the base for the setlist and with ‘Dance on a Volcano’ a first highlight set the stage for the night. Hackett’s exquisite guitar play and Nad Sylvan gentle but energetic vocals let each of the songs shine brightly. Performed by band and the Heart of England Philharmonic Orchestra gives each of the songs an extra dimension. The different layers get together extremely well, always having the song in focus. This doesn’t go only for the Genesis songs. Also Hackett’s solo material performed that night is areal treat for mind and soul, music that makes you forget the hectic of daily life.

No doubt, Steve Hackett and his guitar are literally the centerpiece of the show and I guess nobody expected different. However, it’s band and orchestra getting enough presence too and it’s the entire unit adding all their different puzzle pieces to this great musical picture.

Talking about visuals, the show lasers in on music and any distraction have been reduced to a minimum with even the light show jus supporting the atmosphere rather than being a hectic change of colors and brightness. Instead of being a show element itself, lights support each of the songs, putting them in the spotlight if you will.

Next to the entire show at Royal Festival Hall the DVD/Blu-Ray features 42 minutes of behind the scene material plus three videos, rounding off a well-crafted package for fans of progressive Rock music.
