CD review PHIL CAMPBELL ‘Old Lions Still Roar’

(8/10) Phil Campbell is a musician that doesn’t need any introduction. Known from his many years with legendary Motörhead, Campbell continued his career in Rock/Metal with a generation bridging project called Phil Campbell and The Bastard Sons with him and his sons following their passion for great Rock’n’roll.

Another thought Campbell had in mind for a long time is to record a solo album, an idea that awoke already back in the Motörhead days. Lemmy actually encouraged the guitarist but timing didn’t allow such an endeavor.

Finally in 2019 the time’s right for the nearly 60 years old axeman to release his solo debut and it couldn’t get a better title. ‘Old Lions Still Roar’ is more than merely a title for an album, it’s a statement.

Campbell’s solo release shows two thing. Old lions roar for sure, listening to songs like ‘Swing’ and ‘Straight Up’. What’s great with these songs is the full Rock/Metal experience that comes with it. Next to Campbell’s rocking guitar play it’s Alice Cooper (‘Swing’) and Rob Halford (‘Straight Up’) enriching the tracks with their well-known vocals. Especially Halford shows that he’s not only a Metal siren but also an excellent Rock’n’roll singer.

The highlight of the album comes in the bottom part of the tracklist. Phil Campbell and Twisted Sister’s Dee Snider recorded with ‘These Old Boots’ a Rock’n’roll hymn that’s as great as it is timeless. It’s the best song on an album filled with great songs. ‘These Old Boots’ walked a lot of miles for sure and they’re definitely not worn out.

Next to these loud energizers ‘old lion’s also have a sensitive side. You can’t constantly roar, which manifests itself in some calmer and acoustic moments. The start into the album brings such a song to surface. ‘Rocking Chair’ is a soulful acoustic song with Leon Stanford adding great vocals. Another track in this the touching ‘Dead Roses’, a piano-ballad with a lot of feel embedded in each note played.

Last but not least it’s an instrumental, bringing Campbell and guitar wizard together for a prefect ending of a thrilling longplayer.

‘Old Lions Still Roar’ is an honest and down-to-earth Rock album. Initiated by Phil Campbell it brings together legends of Rock and Metal, performing songs that are all entertaining and cool rocking. If you miss it you can only blame yourself.
