Live report HEAVYSAURUS, Young Sound Festival, Pinneberg – June 27th, 2026

Today, we’re taking a closer look at Milli Pilli, Muffi Puffi, Riffi Raffi, Komppi Momppi, and Mr. Heavysaurus. Together, these larger-than-life dinosaur and dragon characters make up Heavysaurus, a band with a simple but ambitious mission: introducing the next generation to the world of heavy metal.

The story of Heavysaurus began in 2009 when Thunderstone drummer Mirka Rantanen was searching for metal music that his five-year-old son could enjoy. Unable to find anything that truly fit the bill, he decided to create it himself. That idea became Hevisaurus in Finland—a concept that would later evolve into Heavysaurus for the German-speaking market.

The formula is surprisingly simple yet remarkably effective. What do heavy metal and children have in common? Dragons and dinosaurs, of course. Combine colorful prehistoric creatures with catchy heavy metal riffs, energetic performances, and lyrics tailored specifically for young listeners, and you have the recipe for Heavysaurus.

The German version of the band has been entertaining families since 2017. While the original songs were written in Finnish, they have been carefully adapted into German rather than simply translated, resulting in lyrics that connect naturally with young audiences. Tracks like “Pommesgabel” and “Kaugummi ist Mega” perfectly capture the band’s playful spirit while introducing children to classic heavy metal elements, from crunchy guitar riffs and soaring solos to thunderous drums and singalong choruses.

What makes Heavysaurus stand out is that the music is genuine heavy metal rather than children’s music dressed up with guitars. The musicians perform with the same passion and professionalism as any established metal band, while the lyrics remain fun, positive, and age-appropriate. Parents can enjoy the quality of the music just as much as their kids, making a Heavysaurus show an experience for the whole family.

In a genre that often takes itself very seriously, Heavysaurus proves that heavy metal can be loud, entertaining, and family-friendly without losing its authenticity. Whether you’re five or fifty, it’s hard not to smile when dinosaurs start throwing up the horns and rocking out on stage.

Today, Heavysaurus headlines the Young Sound Festival in Pinneberg under extraordinary conditions. Not only is it the hottest day of the year, but it is also officially the hottest June day ever recorded. That makes for an even greater challenge for the band, considering it must feel like a sauna inside their elaborate dino costumes. Fortunately, the stage is completely shaded when the dinosaurs make their entrance and launch straight into “Metal um die Welt” from their new album Metal. It’s a loud, thunderous opener and the perfect introduction to one of the band’s biggest crowd favorites, “Kaugummi ist mega.”

The area directly in front of the stage is reserved for the kids, while parents enjoy the show from the back. It’s hard to tell who’s having more fun today. The children are clearly captivated by the dinosaur spectacle, but the adults aren’t standing still either. Heavysaurus has become a truly cross-generational project, and it continues to work exceptionally well.

The new album is well represented tonight, contributing six songs to the setlist. Judging by the enthusiastic reactions, the young fans are already very familiar with the new material. Still, it’s the fan favorite “Pommesgabel” that brings the regular set to a spectacular close.

Of course, the audience isn’t about to let the dinosaurs leave without an encore. After a short introduction and a few playful snippets of songs—including The White Stripes’ “Seven Nation Army”—the band returns. “Dinos wollen euch tanzen sehen,” built around Scorpions’ classic “Rock You Like a Hurricane,” raises the energy even further as the show races toward its finale.

Before the final song, Mr. Heavysaurus takes a moment to thank everyone involved with the Young Sound Festival for their outstanding work. He also shares a heartfelt message with the audience: heavy metal unites people. It doesn’t matter what gender you are, where you come from, or how old you are—heavy metal brings people and generations together, and a Heavysaurus concert is living proof that this message works beautifully.

“Dino-Metalheads” closes the evening, with the entire crowd singing along at the top of their lungs, providing a fitting ending to both an impressive performance and another successful edition of the festival. This marks the second time Heavysaurus has headlined this charming festival just outside Hamburg. As the saying goes, the best things come in threes—so it will be exciting to see whether the dinosaurs and dragons return in 2027.
