Boston-based Junius have long been a respected name in the post-metal scene. Formed in 2003, the band released their debut album, The Martyrdom of a Catastrophist, in 2009 and quickly established a reputation for crafting atmospheric and emotionally charged music. Following the release of Eternal Rituals for the Accretion of Light in 2017, fans had to wait almost a decade for a new full-length studio album.
That wait has now come to an end with Sotera, the latest offering from the Massachusetts outfit. Fortunately, the album retains all the trademarks that have made Junius such a unique force within the genre.
As always, the band’s sound is rooted in post-metal, but it is the strong shoegaze influence that gives Junius their distinctive sonic identity. This combination shines throughout the album, especially on tracks like “The Oracle.” Driven by crushing riffs and a palpable sense of emotional weight, the song balances moments of intensity with darker vocal passages, creating a captivating and immersive atmosphere.
The band also excels at building powerful soundscapes. “Summon Her” unfolds with remarkable depth and tension, while “Initiatrix” introduces a subtle gothic touch. Anchored by an addictive and deeply melancholic chorus, the track stands out as one of the album’s highlights.
Throughout Sotera, fragile passages and dense walls of sound coexist seamlessly. Songs such as “Darkwater” invite listeners to immerse themselves in Junius’ often spiritual and introspective world. The band’s ability to blend vulnerability and heaviness results in music that feels both emotionally engaging and sonically expansive.
Sotera is ultimately a musical rollercoaster filled with emotional highs and lows. The calmer and more introspective moments, particularly on tracks like “Lucifera,” command the listener’s full attention. This is not music designed for instant gratification or mainstream appeal. Instead, it rewards patience and repeated listening, gradually revealing its many layers and nuances.
Junius have crafted an album that demands commitment from its audience, but those willing to explore its mystical and atmospheric depths will be rewarded with a deeply satisfying listening experience. Sotera is a compelling return that lingers long after the final notes have faded.
