Review MASTODON “Marrow Deep”

Marrow Deep is an album that, in many ways, marks the beginning of a new era for Mastodon. A lot has happened in the five years since the release of Hushed and Grim. The most profound event was undoubtedly the death of Brent Hinds. Now, almost exactly a year later, Mastodon return with a new album, and there is plenty of reason to be curious about what this iconic Atlanta, Georgia band has to offer.

The band’s recent live shows have already made one thing clear: Mastodon are still a force to be reckoned with. During those performances, they introduced “Your Ghost Again,” a new song dedicated to Brent Hinds that was also warmly received by the crowd. There is a sense that this multi-layered powerhouse opens the door to a new chapter for the band. Looking at the three Fates depicted on the album cover only reinforces that feeling. At the same time, “Your Ghost Again” highlights Mastodon’s progressive side, while also revealing something slightly unexpected: both the song and the album as a whole are more direct and streamlined than one might have anticipated.

Marrow Deep features a 12-song tracklist, and the journey begins with “Barbarian Blood.” Operating in the mid-tempo range, the song comes packed with intriguing breaks that repeatedly catch the listener’s attention. It pushes its way into the ear canals with considerable force and proves to be a strong opening statement.

“Snakes for Dinner” is one of the album’s more straightforward pieces, clocking in at around four minutes. Here, melody and vision come together, with Josh Homme adding a guest contribution. The song feels like a kind of essence of the album, reflecting on those who have left us while also looking toward the road ahead.

Speaking of guest appearances, “A Vampire’s Demeanor” deserves a mention as well. This pulsing track comes with furious vocals, shifting between screams and singing to create a tension that moves from anger to melancholy. With Randy Blythe of Lamb of God and Nate Newton of Converge joining in, Mastodon have found two guests who add even more intensity to the song’s eruptions of rage.

Then there is “The Vanishing.” If its opening, driven by a deep, grooving bass line, sounds strangely familiar, you guessed it: Geezer Butler is behind it, giving the track a distinctive introduction. Joe Duplantier of Gojira also contributes vocals, helping turn this slow and emotional piece into one of the album’s standout moments. With its spacey character, “The Vanishing” separates itself from the other songs without ever challenging the album’s overall direction. Quite the opposite: it showcases the musical range that unfolds across Marrow Deep.

Equally emotional is “In the Ruins,” which begins quietly before gradually unleashing its weight. Troy Sanders’ home was devastated by a hurricane, and the song addresses that loss. Alongside its melancholic passages, it also features eruptions of anger. The result is a track that seems to throw an entire spectrum of emotions at the listener.

“They’re Coming for You” combines spacey elements with intricate structures, creating one of the album’s most atmospheric moments. And then there is the closer, “The Three Fates.” We already mentioned the three Fates on the cover, and with this final track, the circle closes. It brings together much of what Mastodon represent, while the spine-tingling spoken-word contribution from Neil Fallon of Clutch provides the final touch.

Emotion and intensity meet here, and what emerges is music capable of making you stop and take notice. Just listen to the jazzy passages as they seamlessly collide with bursts of sheer aggression. This is musicianship meeting emotion and vision, free from trends and the demands of the moment.

Marrow Deep is a strong album that may not be quite what you expected from Mastodon. Once again, the band demonstrates what they are capable of, leaving the listener with plenty to absorb. There is something addictive about the record, and even on the twentieth listen, there are still details waiting to be discovered. It may keep your turntable occupied for quite some time—and, if you catch yourself reaching for the record again before the final track has even faded, well, that little twinkle in the eye might tell you everything you need to know. Marrow Deep is certainly a strong contender for one of the top three releases of 2026.
