Review SEVENDUST “One”

Sevendust recently joined Alter Bridge on their European tour, which saw the band return to Germany for the first time in over 15 years, and fans of powerful alternative rock/metal can now look forward to a new album from the Atlanta-based band.

Titled “One”, Sevendust’s 15th studio album features ten new songs. One amazing thing about Sevendust is that they are still making music with their original line-up, as can be heard on the new album. They are a well-oiled machine that delivers songs like “Is This the Real You?”. With its pounding rhythm and Witherspoon’s impressive vocals, the song has a unique vibe. It is a fusion of different elements which makes the song a highlight of the album. There is intense rhythmic work, and good melodies giving the song a good flow. Witherspoon adds to this positive impression, delivering vocals that jump between growling parts, dark whispers, and superb clean vocals.

The title track, “One”, starts the album, and just to be clear, the song has nothing to do with Metallica. The title track features Sevendust’s signature sound and makes a statement about unity and togetherness. Acting as one makes everyone stronger, even in situations when the future seems bleak. In a sense, the song also describes the band and their journey very well as they act as one.

This theme runs through several other songs on the album, such as “Unbreakable”, which is another captivating moment. “We Won” also connects to the overarching theme, and it is the dark, groovy “Construct” that showcases the band’s talent for writing great rock songs.

“Bright Side” is built around a powerful modern riff and has a gloomy vibe. The downtuned guitars and grooving bass are the defining elements of Sevendust’s sound, also evident on “One”. It was none other than Michael ‘Elvis’ Baskette who gave the album its distinctive punch, turning songs like “Blood Price” into some of the most powerful and pulsating moments on the album.

“Misdirection” is the last and longest song on the album. Starting with a calmer, cinematic intro, the song shifts gears in terms of heaviness, yet never strays from the musical motif established at the beginning. The alternation between heavy, roaring sections interact with hypnotic vocal lines and soulful moments. “Misdirection” is a fitting finale to an album that showcases a band operating at full force.

“One” is the result of a band that has grown together over three decades, finding and successfully maintaining and evolving their own musical identity. “One” is a powerful album from a fully committed band that hasn’t lost any of its energy. In fact, “One” is one of the strongest records Sevendust has released to date.
