Review THE NIGHT ETERNAL “Cold Velvet”

After releasing two EPs, it was their debut album Moonlit Cross that brought The Night Eternal wider attention. The band from Essen, Germany, has been active since 2018 and has continued to evolve with each release. Their sound is becoming increasingly distinctive, combining classic heavy metal with a strong sense of melancholy. Their new album, Cold Velvet, marks another step forward in that development.

Cold Velvet is also the band’s first album to be released through Metal Blade Records, giving them an additional and well-deserved push. With the dark, pulsating “Where This World Ends,” the band has chosen a strong opening track. The song is an excellent hybrid of metal and rock, with its catchy melodic approach adding that little extra spark. It’s the kind of melody that seems to wink at you from the speakers.

The driving “Eurydice (Don’t Look Back)” follows, blending the melancholy of bands like Fields of the Nephilim with a distinctly metallic edge. The result makes it one of the album’s highlights. “Caught in a Spell” is a well-crafted mid-tempo headbanger built around a slightly hypnotic foundation that fills the speakers with a dark and inviting atmosphere.

There are moments on the album that reminded me of Unto Others, and “The Veins of Time” is one of them. Its musical density and melancholic character create occasional parallels, while the song still maintains its own identity. One of its greatest strengths is the catchy chorus, which carries a slightly mystical mood and gives the track plenty of staying power.

“Shape of Sorrow” is characterized by a dark yet alluring melancholy before we reach the album’s final track, “Dance on Crimson Ground.” The closer begins quietly and with plenty of feeling. Rather than simply throwing colorful melodies at the listener, however, it builds its appeal around a deeper sense of wistfulness that runs beneath the catchy songwriting. The song gradually develops into a layered and varied piece that provides a fitting conclusion to the album.

With Cold Velvet, The Night Eternal deliver their third and, so far, strongest album. The four-piece from Essen continues to develop while getting closer to a signature sound of its own. At the same time, the band is fine-tuning the elements that have defined its music so far—and that work clearly pays off.

Cold Velvet is a strong album with enough substance and character to keep earning its place on the turntable for a long time to come.
