Review DETH PROVIDER “Deth Provider”

I think many of you may not have heard much—or perhaps anything at all—about Deth Provider yet. So let me briefly introduce the band, or rather, the project. Deth Provider is the brainchild of rhythm guitarist and riff master Ken Dutton. He had recorded some very interesting riff ideas on his phone and wanted to develop them further. With Herman Bandala and Chris Corona from Molten, Dutton found two fellow musicians ready to bring those ideas to life. When Death Angel drummer Will Carroll joined the project, the songs quickly began to take shape.

The position of vocalist, however, remained open. So Deth Provider turned a challenge into an opportunity and invited a number of guests to help bring the album to life. Dave Gorsuch of legendary Insanity, Matt Harvey of Exhumed, Andre Cornejo of Deathgrave, Sonny Reinhardt of Necrot, and Andrew Lee of Ripped to Shreds can all be heard on the album.

From the crushing opener “Weaponized” to the closing track “Last Breath,” fans of old-school death metal get pretty much everything that makes the genre so enjoyable. “Deth Provider” delivers catchy riffs and furious leads alongside barking growls and solid grooves. Every song offers its own little highlight. While Deth Provider certainly isn’t trying to reinvent death metal, you can hear that this is a group of veterans having a great time stepping outside their usual musical mothership. And honestly, you can almost hear the grin behind some of these riffs.

Take the fast-paced “Walls Closing In,” which captures the fascination of death metal in less than two minutes. Then there’s “Lied Into War,” which not only tackles a more relevant topic but also hits the listener with a groove-infused attack that brings Florida death metal to mind.

Overall, death metal fans should definitely give this album a spin. Deth Provider features musicians who know exactly what they’re doing—and, more importantly, they’re doing it with genuine passion. It’s not every day that old-school death metal comes across this fresh.
