Review GO AHEAD AND DIE ‘Unhealthy Mechanisms’

Go Ahead And Die is a kind of family business; better said another father and son project. Max Cavalera and his son Igor are the driving force of this project which also includes Johnny Valles (d). The latter replaces Zach Coleman and delivers his debut on ‘Unhealthy Mechanisms’.

Go Ahead And Die released a first record in 2021 and apparently the Cavalera’s had enjoyed this project so much that two years later another album is about to hit the record stores.

As on the self-titled debut, the trio pounds their way through a total of ten songs resulting in a 41-minute noise inferno.

If you listen to the record, you get the feeling that the guys are really pissed off. Thematically, the album is about common sense, or what’s left of it these days. The record is the outlet for all the pent-up emotions that make one sick and the trio makes itself heard; and they do it very loudly.

Musically Go Ahead And Die continues to operate in the twilight zone of death metal, thrash metal and punk. To get an impression the brutal ‘Tumors’ is recommended. The song contains massive grooves that characterize the first two thirds of the song before the frenzy takes over towards the end.

With ‘Split Scalp’ it becomes rather crusty while ‘Chasm’ with its five minutes of playing time takes on almost epic scale. Even if the song is relatively long, the band doesn’t get lost in long instrumental passages. Even if the song is a good flow of blasting parts with frantic shouting and grooving moment, it remains the aggressiveness which is the link between the songs.

Unfortunately, it must be said that after a few songs it is difficult to continue listening to the album in one go, because the songs remain within a very narrow framework. In addition, the shouted out vocals become somewhat tiresome after a while, which has anything but a positive effect on the listening delight.

‘Unhealthy Mechanisms’ can be listened to, but it doesn’t have to be. Go Ahead And Die deliver an album, which pleases the protagonists and should some metalheads have fun with it as well, then there is nothing wrong with it.
