Review SINNER “Boom Bang Goodbye”

The first time a Sinner album landed on my turntable was almost exactly 40 years ago. Back then, the band led by Mat Sinner had just released its fifth album, Comin’ Out Fighting, and what came through the speakers made an immediate impression.

Sinner has been a fixture in melodic metal ever since, releasing a long list of albums over the decades. Now, more than 40 years later, the band is bringing its journey to a close with its final studio album. Boom Bang Goodbye serves as Sinner’s farewell, and it is one that stays true to everything the band has stood for.

The album opens with “Dreams Can Come True,” an emotional introduction that carries a fitting message. Sinner’s own career proves that dreams really can become reality when they are backed by determination, hard work, and a clear vision.

“Wait” represents the balance of heaviness and melody that has defined Sinner’s sound throughout its career. It is followed by “Leave It All Behind,” an emotional power ballad in the classic Sinner tradition. Throughout the album, memories, heartfelt moments, and a touch of nostalgia are always present, yet they never overshadow the uplifting spirit that runs through these songs.

That Sinner can still deliver driving heavy metal after more than four decades is evident on the energetic “Hellbreaker.” “Under the Moonlight” matches that intensity with another powerful, riff-driven track that is sure to get heads banging.

The emotional centerpiece of the album comes with “Turn the Page.” Filled with memorable melodies and a subtle sense of reflection, the song is further enhanced by a guest appearance from Saga vocalist Michael Sadler, whose performance adds another layer of depth.

Several well-known singers contribute throughout the record. Björn “Speed” Strid lends his voice to the rocking “Are You Ready,” while Erik Mårtensson delivers a strong performance on “Born to Run.” That track also features longtime Sinner guitarist Mathias “Don” Dieth, adding another connection to the band’s rich history. Michael Bormann and Ronnie Romero, however, handle the majority of the lead vocals and give the album a consistent and confident vocal presence.

Boom Bang Goodbye is a fitting final chapter for Sinner. It is hard to believe this is the band’s last album, as every song carries the unmistakable Sinner identity while bringing the spirit of the ’80s into the present day. It is a farewell that celebrates the band’s legacy with strong songwriting, memorable melodies, and the unmistakable sound that fans have enjoyed for more than four decades.
