CD review COMMUNIC ‘Hiding from the World’

Communic belongs to the category of bands that do not flood the market with new releases, but deliver quality with every album that leaves the studio.

Three years after ‘Where Echoes Gather’ the Norwegian metal specialists return to the scene with ‘Hiding from the World’.
‘Tempe of Pride’ and the title track have already been released in advance, whetting the appetite for the full album that’s available in the stores since a couple of weeks.

With a total of eight tracks and one hour running time the record provides enough musical enjoyment for fans of bands like Nevermore. Communic remain true to their style and once again focus on multi-layered metal that provides long-term entertainment. Felicitous melody lines like in ‘My Temple of Pride’ are as much a part of the whole package as are pithy riffs, the latter an important ingredient of ‘Face in the Crowd’.

Communic are not at all shy of long songs, as they had already released with with ‘Silence Surrounds’ an 11-minute epos on their debut in 2005 and this time the three Norwegians are just a bit below the 10-minute line.

The exquisite ‘Born Without a Heart’ is one of these eclectic hymns, but also the final chapter ‘Forgotten’ should not be forgotten. Introduced by a short prelude, ‘Soon to Be’, the finale becomes a masterpiece. Sensitively and only accompanied by an acoustic guitar, frontman Oddleif Stensland shows that he is an excellent singer next to his six-string capabilites. After about a minute a first riff breaks the harmonic mood without affecting the overall structure. A slight melancholy makes itself felt and darkness continues to grow throughout the rest of the song. ‘Forgotten’ gains slowly in heaviness and develops to a typical Communic anthem with many small details and twists. An amazing ending.

Communic have made good use of the past three years. ‘Hiding from the World’ is their sixth album so far and there are no signs of wear and tear. ‘Hiding from the World’ is a great record that you can listen to several times and you will always discover something new.
