For decades, Sweden’s capital has been a breeding ground for outstanding metal bands, and that tradition clearly continues with a new generation. One of the most exciting young acts to emerge from Stockholm is Bloodstain. Formed in 2023, the four-piece independently released their first EP, I Am Death, which quickly attracted the attention of Threeman Recordings. After signing with the label, the path was clear for the release of their self-titled debut album.
Bloodstain’s sound is rooted in old-school metal, drawing influence from both traditional heavy metal and Bay Area-inspired thrash. The album opens with the six-minute “Annihilation Line.” After a dramatic intro, the song quickly builds momentum, leaning more toward the melodic side of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal while still delivering plenty of grit and intensity.
The album really finds its stride with “Somewhere Sinister.” Driven by powerful riffs and a steady groove, it brings to mind early Metallica without sounding like a copy. The pounding “I Am Death” follows as one of the album’s heaviest moments, fueled by the raw energy and fearless attitude that comes naturally with a young band. You can hear how much Bloodstain enjoys playing this style of music, and that enthusiasm runs through the entire record.
One of the album’s strengths is the way Bloodstain moves effortlessly between aggressive thrash metal and classic heavy metal. The crushing “Taint Me,” complete with its shout-along chorus, has all the ingredients to become a live favorite. Meanwhile, the galloping “Lies Bleeding Through” captures plenty of ’80s spirit while still sounding fresh and modern.
Songs like the more layered “Conspiracy” are solid, even if they don’t stand out quite as much as the strongest tracks. However, “Faceless Dealer” and the powerful closing track “Banner of Supremacy” finish the album with two memorable riff-driven attacks that leave a lasting impression.
For me, Bloodstain has already established itself as one of the most promising newcomers of the year. Their music is energetic, uncompromising, and full of youthful determination. If this debut is any indication, it will be exciting to see where this talented band goes next.
