(8/10) Elvenking came into the picture in 1997 when singer Damna started the band. After having inked a deal with AFM Records the band premiered with ‘Heathenreal’ in 2001, the beginning of a fruitful cooperation over nearly two decades.
2019 is a kind of jubilee for Elvenking. Their new longplayer ‘Reader of the Runes – Divination’ is album number ten the band adds to the books and the track listing of the new record comprises of ten songs, and intro and an acoustic interlude entitled ‘Diamonds in the Night’.
The six Italians are known for bombastic Power Metal with more than a few Folk references and it’s ‘Reader of the Runes – Divination’ making us of the same success formula. The last tones of the intro are picked-up by an acoustic guitar introducing ‘Heathen Divine’. The powerful opener is a true Elvenking songs with a galloping beat, racing guitars and catchy vocals. Folk gets more into the picture with the very rhythm-based ‘Silverseal’ and it’s the melodies of ‘Eternal Eleanor’ that add to another positive impression of what Elvenking offers with this release.
The big moment though is kept until the end. ‘Reader of the Runes – Book I’ is an eleven minutes long closer and a real highlight on this release. The song’s the ace, played at the very end of this album. With its cinematic expression the epos includes the Celtic folk elements, well-done hooklines and guitars on fire. A calmer section is what follows a fast paced solo that slowly builds up towards the end before it’s the calm after the Metal storm that ends the album in a peaceful fashion.
Elvenking releases an album that for sure contains good Power Metal, enriched by Folk elements that are more supportive elements than taking over too much. ‘Reader of the Runes – Divination’ – a continuation of a band with stamina.
