Belgian psychedelic occultists Wolvennest return with a new EP featuring three long-form tracks, all drawn from the sessions that led to Procession. Titled In the Ruins, the release creates an atmosphere that can be both unsettling and strangely captivating.
The EP opens with “The Weakness.” Built around ominous soundscapes, the track relies almost entirely on spoken word, with occasional choral passages providing another layer to the arrangement. There is a heavy, deliberate quality to the song as it slowly works its way into the listener’s subconscious. Repetition becomes the main tool, creating a hypnotic pull while an occult undertone adds a sense of unease. The result is music that manages to feel both fascinating and uncomfortable at the same time.
“Transcendance” follows, and Wolvennest stay firmly within the territory they have established for themselves. Unlike the opener, the narrative focus here comes from Shazzula’s vocals. Dark and atmospheric, the track has a ritualistic quality without relying on conventional song structures. Ambient textures meet psychedelic depth, creating a sound that seems to hover between music and altered state.
Shazzula’s vocals once again blend into the track’s dense sonic layers, becoming an essential part of its dark, unsettling atmosphere. It becomes another layer within the overall arrangement. “In the Ruins” follows a similar blueprint to the two preceding tracks, yet there is something darker and more menacing about it. The song seems designed to bypass the conscious mind, reinforcing the idea that Wolvennest are creating more than individual songs here.
Instead, they build dark, psychedelic soundscapes that gradually surround the listener. The repetition, atmosphere, and layered textures leave little room to simply sit back and listen from a distance. In the Ruins is an immersive release, one that draws the listener deeper into Wolvennest’s particular sonic world with each passing minute.
