Review POWERMÖNGER “Powermönger”

Jawbreaker Records is one of those labels willing to give young and ambitious metal bands a shot. This time around, the Swedish label has put its faith in Powermönger from Canada, releasing the band’s debut EP.

Hailing from Vancouver and Calgary, Powermönger are firmly rooted in traditional heavy metal. With bands like Nasty Savage, Liege Lord and Razor among their influences, the Canadian five-piece brings an old-school attitude and plenty of speed to the underground.

The EP wastes no time getting started. “Powermönger” hits hard right out of the gate, with vocalist Blaise’s sharp scream immediately setting the tone. The song is steeped in traditional heavy metal but pushes the tempo close to speed-metal territory. It makes for a strong opening. Cutting riffs, heavy drumming and commanding vocals give the track plenty of drive. Sure, you can hear the band’s influences in places, but Powermönger already have enough personality to leave their own mark.

“Leather Legions” pushes the pace even further, with Blaise once again proving to be a powerful presence behind the mic. Another thing that stands out is the production. It has that unmistakable underground character, but its rough edges work in the band’s favor. It feels less unfinished than unpolished—a raw piece of metal that has yet to lose its bite.

“Hellfighter” keeps that approach intact. The song originally appeared on the band’s 2025 demo, and its fast, rough-edged attack brings early Hallows Eve to mind. Powermönger don’t clutter things up with unnecessary tricks. They simply play heavy metal, straight and to the point. The same goes for the blistering “Off the Menu.” These tracks hit quickly and get the job done without overthinking the formula.

There is something genuinely fun about following this kind of musical trip back to the roots of heavy metal. Powermönger clearly know the tradition they are working within, and they play it with the enthusiasm of a band that still gets a kick out of loud guitars and fast riffs.

So far, Powermönger have kept their foot firmly on the gas. But “Order of the Lich,” clocking in at around five minutes, shows that they can do more than just race from one riff to the next. Slow, heavy and almost molten in its movement, the track rolls into the listener’s ears like steaming hot lava. There are still tempo changes along the way, but this is the most layered moment on the EP and a good indication that the band has more in its arsenal than sheer speed.

The roots of Powermönger’s musical identity become even clearer with “Max Overload,” a cover of the Belgian metal pioneers Acid. Acid built a strong underground following without ever making the major breakthrough, but their place in the history of early European speed metal is hard to overlook.

Choosing “Max Overload” as the closer makes perfect sense. It connects Powermönger’s own sound with one of the bands that helped shape the territory they are exploring. More importantly, this EP shows that Powermönger have the drive and the passion to make their own mark. This is only the first step, but it points in a promising direction.
