Jaded Heart is arguably the band that has mattered most to Michael Bormann, both then and now. The singer spent 14 years as the band’s voice before leaving in 2004, but his time with one of Germany’s notable rock acts still echoes today. Michael Bormann’s Jaded Hard is more than a name that nods back to Jaded Heart. Its musical direction also draws from that chapter of Bormann’s career. Originally conceived as a project to keep the spirit of his Jaded Heart years alive, Michael Bormann’s Jaded Hard has gradually grown into a band with its own identity, and South West gives that foundation a little more weight.
With all those years of experience behind him, Bormann has put together eleven tracks rooted in the sound of the ’80s but dressed in a more modern production. He moves comfortably between hard rock and melodic metal, although hard rock clearly gets the larger share of the spotlight.
“Country Boy” opens the album with an intro that immediately brings Bon Jovi to mind. The track soon settles into a stomping rock groove made for a little head-nodding. The Bon Jovi comparison never completely disappears, but there is enough of Bormann’s own character in the song to keep it from becoming a simple exercise in nostalgia.
“That’s the Only Truth” takes a more restrained approach. The song is built around a quieter arrangement and Bormann’s expressive vocals, giving the album one of its more emotional moments. It is a classic rock ballad without unnecessary detours, relying on melody, atmosphere, and the strength of the vocal performance to carry it. Nothing groundbreaking, but a solid change of pace that fits naturally into the album.
“In the Shadows of the Night” picks up the pace again, with the keyboards adding an extra layer of atmosphere and density. The harder-rocking side of Bormann also comes through on “There’s No Living Without You.” The song moves between powerful passages and more emotional sections, bringing those elements together in a well-shaped AOR number. “Cheers To” closes the album on a more personal note. Bormann dedicates this emotional and touching song to Holger Bussler, giving South West a quiet, heartfelt ending.
Michael Bormann’s Jaded Hard have put together a well-crafted album that moves comfortably between roaring riffs and calmer passages. Hard rock takes center stage, while melodic metal adds some extra color to the mix. South West is not here to rewrite the playbook, and it doesn’t need to. It is an entertaining, easy-to-enjoy record that works particularly well as a complete album listen.
