Review HELD. “Grey”

Held. is a band comprising guitarist Douglas Robinson and bassist Sal Mignano (both of The Sleeping), as well as drummer Josh Eppard (Coheed and Cambria). This experienced trio’s debut studio album, “Grey”, features ten songs. The collective’s music is rooted in alternative rock, infused with post-hardcore undertones.

“Grey” opens with “Defending the Earth”, a furious song with some nice twists. This straightforward opener has a certain layered approach that fits the album very well.

Next is the lead single. “New You Anthem” gives an idea of Held.’s sound, and features a guest musician. Frank Iero (of My Chemical Romance) can be heard on this rocking anthem, whose melody sticks in the mind immediately. “New You Anthem” has a positive spirit. It’s a song about music, friendship, and self-confidence — a celebration of life and passion, even in tough times.

With “Knifepoint”, the post-hardcore impact comes to the fore. This rumbling song spreads rebellious energy while also showcasing a superb melodic approach. The London-based hardcore punk band High Vis make a guest appearance, which adds to the rough edges of this barnstorming song.

“Waves of Fire” is short and intense — another wild ride that leads to the title track. “Grey” starts off atmospherically and maintains this flow from start to finish. While listening to “Grey”, I was more reminded of bands like Enter Shikari.
With “Through the Cracks”, the roaring power of Held returns. The heavier side of Held.s sound shapes the foundation of “Through the Cracks”, while a subtle melody makes the song blossom immediately.

“Broken Spacesuit (Deacy and Sand)” could be from the soundtrack of a dystopian sci-fi film about the vastness of the universe, before “Emptiness – A Side Effect” brings the album to a close.

Held. deliver a promising debut album. The collective’s music showcases great craftsmanship, and is driven by creative freedom. The album is structured yet includes surprising twists. It is down-to-earth yet still features superb dynamics. “Grey” is far less grey than what the artwork and title suggest.
