Review VILLAGERS OF IOANNINA CITY “Venceremos”

One of the bands that has made an impressive rise over the past few years is Villagers Of Ioannina City. It was back in 2019 that I first heard about the Greek band. Their Age of Aquarius album had just been released, and what came through the speakers was an intriguing mix of rock and metal with progressive structures and a psychedelic touch.

Interestingly, the band does not have a huge number of studio albums under its belt, yet the Greeks have managed to establish themselves firmly on the scene. In fact, Venceremos is the follow-up to Age of Aquarius and shows another step forward in the band’s development. Villagers Of Ioannina City remain true to their roots while continuing to expand their sound. The new album feels more layered and brings together a wider range of influences.

Right from “Home,” with its almost hypnotic moments, it becomes clear that the band has continued to evolve. At nearly ten minutes, the song stays firmly rooted in its basic framework, yet the band creates a sense of tension and progression that pulls the listener in. It is the kind of track that quietly demands your attention—and before you know it, ten minutes have passed.

“Ghosts in the Sky” comes next, and some listeners may already know the track, as it served as the album’s lead single. Compared to “Home,” the song is more accessible and driven by lively melodies. A folk element is impossible to overlook, and in some ways it reminds me a little of Solstafir. Most importantly, though, the melody sticks with you, especially as the song approaches its chorus.

At the center of the album stands the title track, built around pulsating rhythms and beautifully crafted melodic passages. It is a dynamic piece that more than earns the album its name. “Venceremos” is captivating from the first listen and contains enough detail to reveal something new with each spin.

This is also part of the band’s appeal. Villagers Of Ioannina City have a knack for combining strong melodies with depth and variety. That makes songs like “Here and Now,” which clocks in at eleven minutes, engaging from beginning to end. It is the small nuances and unexpected twists that turn the track into one of the album’s standout moments. The full range of the Greeks’ sound unfolds across those eleven minutes. The quieter opening and the transition into roaring guitars and catchy heavy rock are handled with a great sense of timing and will have fans reaching for the volume knob.

“Epitaph,” at just three minutes, is a mystically tinged interlude that leads into “Requiem.” The closer takes the motif introduced in “Epitaph” and develops it into a heavy and melancholic song. As the title suggests, “Requiem” is not exactly a carefree, colorful affair. Instead, it brings the album to a close with progressive elements, layered arrangements, and plenty of emotional intensity. When the final note fades away, you may find yourself sitting there for a moment, wondering where the last hour went.

Villagers Of Ioannina City have once again delivered an album that leaves a strong impression. Their musical vision and craftsmanship allow them to create music that connects on an emotional level and refuses to leave the listener cold. Venceremos is a thoughtful, atmospheric, and adventurous album that rewards repeated listens.
