Review JETHRO TULL “Curious Ruminant”

The man who established the flute in rock is Ian Anderson and his band Jethro Tull. I have liked the sound of the band for decades. When I was a kid and I heard “Locomotive Breath”, I became interested in the sound of the band. Being a kid, I didn’t have a lot of money, so I went to the local record store called 33 1/3 to listen to their albums, and I guess they didn’t like me there very much because I didn’t buy the record (actually, I bought a lot of stuff there later).

After such a short excursion into the early 80s we come back to the here and now. Jethro Tull release a new album with “Curious Ruminant”, which is the third one in a row since the reunion in 2017. Besides Anderson, the band consists of David Goodier, John O’Hara, Scott Hammond and Jack Clarke, who makes his recording debut with the band.

“Curious Ruminant” contains nine songs that represent everything that Jethro Tull stands for. It is the combination of rock, folk and progressive music that echoes through each of the songs, including the signature sound of the flute.

The new album builds on three main aspects related to Anderson, who is the driving force of Jethro Tull. There is Anderson’s voice, which immediately stands out from many other singers. It is this warm way of singing that sometimes crosses the border to a narrative approach, as in “Interim Sleep”.

At the same time, the flute is more than just an instrument that has become the band’s trademark. It’s the gently “singing” sound of the flute that helps Jethro Tull to transport emotions without words. The beautiful epos “Drink from the Same Well” is a perfect example of the instrument’s important role in the band’s music. Jethro Tull create exquisite soundscapes that are a treat for both the ears and the mind. You just want to sit back, close your eyes and follow the story the flute is telling.

In addition to these emotive moments, there are songs like the title track that are sharp and rocking. Not shying away from a harder guitar sound, the band also knows how to write a powerful rock song that still fits the iconic band’s trademark sound.

The upbeat “The Tipu House” is almost lighthearted and also shows the folk influences of Jethro Tull and is a contrast to the following track “Savannah of Paddington Green”. The acoustic-driven song is an emotional highlight of the album, which also relies on its folk roots.

“Curious Ruminant” is another great addition to Jethro Tull’s long list of releases. Finesse and a great sense of harmonies make these songs a soul treat in hectic times.
