Review IHSAHN ‘Fascination Steet Sessions’ – (EP)

It’s been quite a while since Ihsahn released a full-length record. It was in 2018 when ‘Àmr’ saw the light of day and since then the exceptional Norwegian artist has focused on EP releases. Following ‘Telemark’ and ‘Pharos’, ‘Fascination Steert Sessions’ is now the third EP in a row.

The new release contains three songs and ‘Dom Andra’ is a Kent cover. The EP is the result of Ihsahn working with URM Academy’s online music production education program and producer/engineer Jens Bogren (Opeth, Dimmu Borgir, Arch Enemy, Powerwolf) of Fascination Street Studios.

‘The Observer’ kicks things off. The song lives on very well done changes of intensity and atmosphere. There are the quiet moments that alternate with powerful outbursts, which gives the song a unique range of voltage. At the same time, keyboarder Øystein Aadland not only provides an atmospheric acoustic layer, but also contributes with warm and gentle vocals.

‘Contorted Monuments’, on the other hand, is less heavy. Melodies and a certain ease come to the fore. Of course, it’s Ihsahn’s slightly husky vocals that give the song a black soul. Still, the song is quite rocking, while the middle section gives the tune its depth.

‘Dom Andra’, as mentioned before, is a cover of the Swedish mainstream rockers Kent. Ihsahn doesn’t move musically that far away from the original track. Moreover, the musician has with Jonas Renske (Katatonia) a singer on board for this song, whose voice fits perfectly to the slightly melancholic sound of the piece.

‘Fascination Street Sessions’ is a very worthy EP and after the three songs have faded away, the thought arises of when one will be offered an entire Ihsahn album again as the musical repertoire of the Norwegian seems boundless.
