Review PROTECTOR ‘Excessive Outburst of Depravity’

Even if Protector never made it into the first league of thrash metal, the guys still achieved a lot. The first three albums are certainly among the highlights of the German metal underground of the late ’80s.

After Protector had overcome a breakup in 2011 and made up lost ground with a reunion album called ‘Reanimated Homunculus’, the band achieved further noteworthy triumphs.

These days, ‘Excessive Outburst of Depravity’ is the next studio album coming into the store. The band shows once again how to combine musical harshness with clever filigree, something that unloads in songs like the driving ‘Pandemic Misery’. In addition, ‘Open Skies and Endless Sea’ is to point out. The song contains exciting tempo changes. Hypnotic verses blend into ultra-fast parts and the wild guitar solo rounds everything off. A song that goes in the same direction is titled ‘Thirty Years of Perdition’. With infinite power this metal anthem rolls into the ear canals and headbanging is a must. In between this rather epic songs ‘Toiling in Sheol’ and ‘Infinite Tyranny’ slam out of the speakers with uncompromising brutality.

Martin Missy and his crew have created with ‘Excessive Outburst of Depravity’ a very felicitous metal masterpiece. On this album the elemental force of thrash metal is reflected. Nothing is polished or aligned to any trend. It’s all about the music – raw and wild. Quality is in the foreground and underlines Protector’s important position when it comes to thrash metal from Europe. Excellent.
