Some interesting post rock/metal bands hail from Spain. There is Tundra, an instrumental band with a passion for progressive instrumental music and there is Syberia. The moniker of the latter might make one think about a band that either plays symphonic metal or some harsh extreme metal. None of the two is what Syberia’s music is about. The quartet from Barcelona musically leans towards post metal, music that, in a way, reminds of bands like Long Distance Calling.
Starting as an instrumental rock band, Syberia shifted towards post metal during the last years and the ‘Seeds of Change’ album was a kind of starting point. With their fourth album, the Spanish quartet picks it up where they left off with their previous release. 42 minutes of well-crafted post metal is what ‘Statement of Death’ entails.
Syberia creates bigger soundscapes and focus on atmosphere more than just pure riff power. The guys generate a lot of depth with the five songs that made it on ‘Statement of Death’. Although having found their own trademarks, the quartet has enough versatility to play with nuances of their sound which makes listening to the album to an entertaining trip through the world of Syberia’s sound.
‘Statement of Death’ features music that has layers and at the same time comes from the heart. This isn’t brain-oriented and tech-focused music. These five songs go straight to the heart and capabilities of the band members are more of a means to an end to accomplish the musical vision.
