If the name Eric St. Michaels sounds familiar to you, it might be from his time as the singer of China. King Zebra is the singer’s new band and actually the band is not that new. In 2017, the first single was released, followed by more singles and an EP. What was missing was a full studio album, a gap that is now being closed.
‘Survivors’ is the title of the first full-length album and delivers ten upbeat songs. King Zebra play hard rock in which catchy melodies are an important feature. The chorus of tracks like ‘She Don’t Like My R’n’R’ don’t need long to be sung along. But the quartet also manages to integrate the rock’n’roll spirit into every track and the pushing ‘Wall of Confusion’ should be mentioned in this context. The tune has a lot of power and a rock solid drive.
Groove is another important element for King Zebra, manifested by a pumping bass, such as on ‘Rush’. The listener can’t do other than taping his foot along. Also to mention in this context is the grooving ‘We Are One’, a song with some L.A. Guns vibes.
To sum up, ‘Survivors’ is a thoroughly enjoyable album. It is first of all an entertaining record with a lot of positive energy, both important things in these days. Rock’n’Roll never dies.
