Devin Townsend played the last real live show in front of an enthusiastic crowd in March 2020 in Dallas. What came next was the rise of a pandemic, lockdowns and no live music. To still stay connected with fans and bring music to their homes, the iconic musician from Canada performed a live stream concert on April 18th, 2020, the kickstart of a series of streaming events.
A year later, on May 1st, 2021, we are still in lockdowns and therefor it is time for quarantine show #7, streamed to the world from The Farm Studios, Sunshine Coast, BC, Canada. ’Sunshine’ and ’coast’ are actually not only describing the location but also the scenery of this streaming event. It’s a sunny day in British Columbia and the view to the waterfront is impressive. Surrounded by beautiful nature, Townsend positions himself and his equipment in the middle of a huge terrace, being the unusual stage for this stream. In a way exceptional, but logical, is the fact of Townsend being alone on stage. Most of the bands stream a concert, all together on performing on stage. But here it is a Devin Townsend stream, it’s called ’Quarantine Concert Series’ and quarantine means that you are alone. Actually, Townsend wasn’t entirely alone since he was accompanied by a dog during ‘Funeral’. It’s authentic moments like this, that make such a stream to something real in a digital world.
Musically, the focus this time is on the 1997 record ’Ocean Machine: Biomech’ and the scenery fits perfect to this progressive rock album with its embedded ambient spice. It feels like nature and music units and become one during these 75 minutes. The sound is great and listening to songs is a treat for ears, while the eyes are satisfied by the beautiful view. One could become a bit jealous.
The chorus of ‘Ocean Machines’, performed acoustic, marks the end of this special stream. Pure improvisation and great to watch.
Due to music and scenery, Townsend seventh quarantine session is not only a very entertaining way to spend a (Saturday) evening. It is a treat for ears, eyes and mind.
