CD review GOTTHARD ‘The Eyes of a Tiger – A Gotthard Tribute to our Unforgotten Friend!’

To date ten years ago, Steve Lee, frontman of Swiss-based hard rock powerhouse Gotthard, lost his life in a terrible motorcycle accident on the Interstate 15 in Nevada, USA. It was a shock for rock fans and it was a deep cut for Gotthard. Steve Lee was an important contributor for the band and Gotthard’s successful cruise through the worlds of hard rocking music. Not having him around anymore put some question marks on the list. Luckily Gotthard decided to continue, having also found with Nic Maeder another excellent singer and frontman.

Although entering a new era of Gotthard, guitarist Leo Leoni and his fellow bandmates always preserve the memory and never forgot their former singer and friend. To manifest this even stronger, Gotthard had plans for a memorial concert before the pandemic changed a lot of things. Instead, the band releases with ‘The Eyes of a Tiger – A Gotthard Tribute to our Unforgotten Friend!’ an album that is built on recordings the band had in their archives. They had the feeling that it is now the right moment to share them with the fans, featuring songs like ‘One Life One Soul’, Lift U Up’ and ‘Let it Be’. Stripped down to acoustic versions, these songs are what fans get with a soulful release that also includes two versions of Survivor’s ‘Eye of the Tiger’. The acoustic version fits perfect into the context of the album while the electric version is an electrifying interpretation too.

‘The Eyes of a Tiger – A Gotthard Tribute to our Unforgotten Friend!’ is a very touching album that has the potential to let a little tear run down your cheecks. Don’t have your tissues too far away but also enjoy 55 minutes of good rock music as what it is, an homage to a great rock singer.
