CD review TUNDRA ‘Das Cabinet des Dr. Caligari’

Spanish instrumental band Toundra decided to challenge themselves by creating a soundtrack for a movie that celebrates its 100 years anniversary in 2020. ‘Das Cabinet des Dr. Caligari’ is a silent movie from Germany, directed by Robert Wiene and premiered in 1920. The storyline of the movie is an innovative one, also considering the time when production happened.

It’s about authoritarianism, manipulation, freedom and human nature. Controlling ideas and influencing humans are the general content patterns of the storylines, with ideologies of intolerance being a real danger.Looking into it feels like time stood still since many of these topics are as relevant today as they were a century ago.

Toundra got inspired by the film and the story. 2 years after having released the ‘Vortex’ album the band returns with a 7 track containing ‘soundrack’ with a 73 minutes running time. ‘Das Cabinet des Dr. Caligari’ has the same structure as the movie. Split up in 6 acts, Toundra provides a musical interpretation of what happens in the specific chapters of the film. Following an intro entitled ‘Titelsequenz’, it’s the intensity of the storyline that the four musicians embed in their songs and transfer into a musical expression.

‘Das Geheimnis des Dr. Caligari’ is a step out of Toundra’s comfort zone, an experiment with a successful result. The four guys, hailing from Madrid, captured the vibe and mood of the movie and by that created a real soundtrack that bridges many decades of art. Well done Toundra.
