CD review BLACK SWAN ‘Shake the World’

Black Swan, that’s vocalist Robin McAuley (McAuley Schenker Group), guitarist Reb Beach (Winger, Whitesnake), bassist Jeff Pilson (Foreigner, The End Machine, ex-Dokken), and drummer Matt Starr (Ace Frehley, Mr. Big). These well-known guys found together and started a colleboration under the banner of Black Swan. The fruitful work now leads to a first album of the quartet called ‘Shake the World’.

The title track starts the engine of this Rock’n’Roll delight. The song actually reminded me of Rainbow’s ‘Difficult to Cure’, which isn’t a bad reference. It might not be the case that this album shakes the world, but it certainly has enough power to shake your apartment and the opener is the seismic shock.

Black Swan combines the best of Hard Rock and Melodic Metal on this longplayer. They fit perfectly into the musical portfolio of Frontiers Music with songs covering sentimental emotions (‘Make it There’) up to the rock and rolling ‘She’s On to Us’.

The end of the album carries a surprise. According to the label info-sheet Jeff Pilson wrote one song right after having seen the ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ movie and it rubbed off on the closing chapter. It can’t be any other track than ‘Divided United’. Already the piano-based start reminds of the mighty Queen and these moments don’t get less along the way. ‘Divided United’ is a great song to end a very well-crafted Hard Rock album done by veterans in Rock/Metal.

Fans of hand-crafted music, calling bands like Foreigner, Rainbow and Dokken to their favorites, should check out the album. You will not be disappointed.
