Dead Kosmonaut’s hailing from Sweden and is a band that’s rather new. The protagonists though are the opposite of ‚new‘. It’s veterans in Heavy Metal that found together under the moniker and started a cooperation with first tangible result in 2017.
‚Expect Nothing‘ was the title of the debut that’s now followed by the sophomore release ‚Gravitas‘. Dead Kosmonaut is into Heavy Metal and their interpretation is exciting due to the approach. Bandleader Mattias Reinholdsson builds the music on the early days of Metal when bands had endless freedom due to a lacking references, a time when Metal had all freedom on its side. All kinds of facets influenced music at the very beginning and Reinholdsson wanted to achieve a similar expression with ‚Gravitas‘.
After having listened to the seven songs several times I can conclude that he succeeded with his ambition. ‚Gravitas‘ is an exciting longplayer that refers to the sound of early Heavy Metal without being bound to traditional riffs and rhythms only. The powerful ballad ‚Hell/Heaven‘ reflects this in a perfect fashion. The eleven minutes ode to music is the centrepiece of the album, not only because it’s half way down the tracklist. It’s an epic composition that mainly stays in a calmer mode with some powerful outbreaks, spicing up this masterpiece.
The title track follows and is with a bit more than a minute running time not more than an intermezzo, leading to ‚Dead Kosmonaut – Part 1‘, another short sidetrack and the intro to the next epic moment – ‚Dead Kosmonaut – Part 2‘. Emotional depth, blistering solo parts and big soundscapes is what makes the track to another highlight on this release, a song you shouldn’t miss.
To conclude: ‚Gravitas‘ is a terrific new longplayer by Swedish Dead Kosmonaut. The band managed to produce an album that shows many different aspects of Rock and Metal. ‚Gravitas‘ – an excellent piece of work.
