DVD review LEE AARON ‘Power, Soul, and Rock’n’ Roll – Live In Germany!’

(*/10) Canadian Rock icon Lee Aaron toured through Germany in 2017 to also promote the 2016 release ‘Fire and Gasoline’. Two shows were filmed and the ready-made product will drop in September this year.

Two show are the base for this live release and they couldn’t be much more different. It was the concert at Hirsch in Nuremberg that was captured. It’s a small club with an intimate atmosphere that hosts Lee Aaron and band in July 2017. In front of enthusiastic fans the gig has a special vibe that comes across very well on this DVD.

The second show was at Bang Your Head! Festival in Balingen the same year. The singer from Bellville, Ontario performed in sunlight and in front of a big festival crowd. Supported by an experienced band, consisting of Sean Kelly, Dave Reimer and Joh Cody, the show was a rock and metal highlight.

The DVD in total features 13 songs, featuring new and old material of Lee Aaron, plus two cover songs. The tracklist on this release doesn’t follow a chronological order with some songs taken from the festival capturing and others, the biggest part, filmed in Nuremberg. What’s a bit confusing are the sequences with a split screen with 1/3 being from one concert and 2/3 from the other.

When it comes to songs it’s for sure the epic ‘Metal Queen’ that stands out and it isn’t surprising that the DVD includes the BYH version with metalheads chanting the chorus. For the rest this live DVD represents a pretty good mix of Lee Aaron. ‘Call of the Wild’ and ‘Bodyrock’ are represented by two songs each while songs like ‘I’m a Woman’ unveils Lee Aaron’s passion for Blues. What keeps the width of styles, from metal to Blues, together is Aaron’s voice. From gentle tones to powerful Metal, the Canadian singer has all in her repertoire.

As ‘Extras’ the DVD comes with three videos – ‘American High’, Diamond Baby’ and ‘I’m a Woman’. A photo show rounds off ‘Power Soul Rock’n’Roll (Live in Germany), a good summary of Lee Aaron that shows the repertoire of the ‘Metal Queen’.
