Review NIGHT LASER “Rats in the Cradle”

Two years after the release of Call Me What You Want, Hamburg hard rockers Night Laser are back with a new album. With the same lineup as before, the band has had plenty of time to sharpen its identity and tighten the screws on its sound. And it shows. More seasoned as a unit, the four-piece delivers eleven new tracks that make it clear they have grown both as musicians and songwriters.

The opening track, “S.T.F.U.,” wastes little time making that point. Night Laser still operate firmly in the territory of glam and sleaze rock, but the songwriting feels more focused and the performances more confident. The riffs hit harder, the arrangements have more shape, and there is a noticeable sense that the band knows exactly where it wants to go.

“Make You Mine” brings a darker edge and a hefty groove before giving way to “Defenders.” The latter is one of the album’s standout moments, with Night Laser shifting into high gear and letting the guitars run wild. The track leans toward power metal territory, and the band gets some extra vocal muscle from Sebastian Zierof, a former The Voice of Germany semifinalist. His contribution adds another layer to the song’s already anthemic character.

“Blueberry Gin” takes a bluesier route and keeps things interesting with some well-placed tempo changes. Then comes “Heart of the Desert Rose,” featuring guest vocalist Johnny Gioeli and carrying a distinct Great White flavor. It is a nice change of scenery without feeling out of place.

The title track takes another step toward metal rather than straight-up rock and also stands out thematically. “Rats in the Cradle” deals with Japanese war criminal Dr. Shirō Ishii, showing that Night Laser are willing to look beyond the colorful side of rock ’n’ roll. There is room here for darker and more serious subject matter, too.

Naturally, no album in this genre would be complete without a classic power ballad. “Into the West” fills that slot, slowing things down before handing the baton to the pulsating and dynamic “19CR490.” The title refers to the case number of United States of America v. Jeffrey Epstein, and Night Laser use the track to deliver a pointed musical middle finger to anyone who thinks wealth and power put them above the law.

With “Get Out,” the band steps back on the gas before the atmospheric “Goddess in the Sky” gradually brings the album toward its conclusion. “You and Me” then closes things out with an acoustic-driven approach, leaving the record on a more restrained note.

Beyond the band’s musical development, the production deserves a mention. Eike Freese is at the helm, giving Rats in the Cradle a punchy, dynamic sound that allows the individual instruments to breathe while keeping the overall performance tight. The production suits the band’s mix of hard rock, glam, sleaze, and metal without sanding off the rough edges.

Night Laser have taken a sizeable step forward in recent years, and Rats in the Cradle feels like their most mature record so far. More importantly, this sounds like a band that has found its chemistry and genuinely enjoys playing together. That sense of fun comes through in every track. Despite all the work that clearly went into the album, Rats in the Cradle never feels overly calculated. There is still a certain lightness running through the record—and that may be one of its biggest strengths. The riffs are serious, the subjects occasionally darker, but Night Laser never forget that rock ’n’ roll is supposed to be fun.
