Hailing from Germany, Midnight Rider is a band whose musical roots can be found in the late ’70s/early ’80s. They started in 2004, but didn’t release a debut album until 2017. These days, the band is launching their third album, “Limited Infinity,” which follows “Beyond the Blood Red Horizon”.
Midnight Rider has undergone some lineup changes, and Blumi is the only remaining founding member who is still active in the band. The new additions are Nik on bass, Hendrik on drums, and Chris Black (of High Spirits) on vocals. Black especially gives the new album an extra push, raising the bar for Midnight Rider’s music. At the same time, the new album shows some parallels with High Spirit, which is a logical consequence.
As mentioned, “Limited Infinity” draws inspiration from the late ’70s and early ’80s, as can be heard in the swinging title track. “The Renegade” was the lead single, and Midnight Rider’s influences are apparent. This pulsating rocker is a well-done heavy rock song. With its powerful beat, the song is a mesmerizing piece on the album. “Generations” has a solid retro vibe, and the galloping “The Battle of Brighton” has some grooving Thin Lizzy influences. Black’s vocals are a great addition to the band’s overall sound, especially in songs like the pulsating “Blitzlight”.
“Limited Infinity” doesn’t change the world of music, nor is the album brimming with new ideas. Instead, Midnight Rider deliver a solid, well-crafted heavy rock album with fine melodies and the right level of heaviness. The hooks do what they are supposed to do, adding a captivating catchiness to the album. “Limited Infinity” strikes a balance between light-hearted swing and doomy heaviness, providing the album with a nice flow. In this case, a vintage vibe reigns over innovation, resulting in a soul-warming rock album that concludes with the acoustic “Evening Lights”.
