Review CYHRA “Requiem for a Pipe Dream”

The Swedish melodic metal band Cyhra is launching a new longplayer titled “Requiem for a Pipe Dream” . It is the band’s fourth studio album and contains eleven new songs. Cyhra was founded in 2016 by Jake E. and Jesper Strömblad. The band focuses on melodic and modern-sounding metal, combining In Flames-style riffing with candy-sweet melodies.

These trademarks appear immediately during the opener, “Bleed With Pride,” and the pop-like musical approach resonates throughout the following “Superman.” Their sugary hooks would be every dentist’s best friend. “Superman” mirrors the band’s mainstream aspect.

Staying true to their musical approach, the band added a darker song, “Miss Me When I’m Gone,” to the mix, which still puts synth in the center. The album also includes an off-the-shelf ballad, “In the Center of a Miracle,” which pleases your soul but is far from metal.

The heavier side of Cyhra returns at the beginning of “Ghost I’m Meant to Be.” The guitar is more prominent at the start, while the catchy vocal line provides a counterpoint.

Regardless of where you drop the needle, the musical approach doesn’t change. The only heavier song on the album is “Hold Your Fire,” featuring Samy Elbanna (Lost Society) which is a powerful finale that still lives by a well-crafted melody.

“Requiem for a Pipe Dream” is an album that impresses with its melodies and catchiness. It’s hard to resist these melodies, but the number of surprising twists and memorable moments is limited. The album provides 38 colorful minutes, but very little sticks with you long term.
