Review ARTILLERY “Made in Hell” – EP

Hailing from Denmark, Artillery are among the true veterans of Scandinavian thrash metal. Albums like “Terror Squad” and “By Inheritance” are legendary. These two albums should be part of every solid collection. Unfortunately, the spotlight on thrash- and heavy metal dimmed in the ’90s, leading to Artillery’s split.

After an on-off period, the band returned in 2007 and released six albums. The latest, “X”, was launched in 2021, and now the band is releasing an EP containing new material.

The new release is titled “Made in Hell” and features four songs. Two of these are new, beginning with the title track. Michael Stützer and Peter Thorslund are the longest-standing members of the band, while Frederik Kjelstrup Hansen (drums), René Loua (guitar) and Martin Stenne (vocals) are the more recent additions. The trio started in 2023, and this is their first release showcasing their talents.

“Made in Hell” is a traditional thrash metal track bursting with energy while staying true to the genre. “Ghost in the Machine” starts off melodically while maintaining the heaviness of the opener. The groove factor is slightly higher, and the blistering leads, combined with the throbbing rhythm, are a particular highlight. This is raw, unpolished leather-and-denim thrash metal.

The EP also includes a re-recording of a song originally from the “Fear of Tomorrow” album, titled “Into the Universe”. “The Almighty” comes in a live version, capturing the band’s performance in 2024.

“Made in Hell” will bridge the wait for a potential next studio album. Artillery demonstrate that they have not lost their full-throttle approach to thrash metal, roaring like they did in the early days. Good stuff for headbangers!
