Review VICTORY KID “Catalyst”

West Coast punk outfit Victory Kid have launched a new album called “Catalyst”, containing 13 new punk rock anthems. The Los Angeles-based band formed in 2015 and gained initial recognition with a protest song called “Tuck Frump”.

Victory Kid infuse their punk rock with ska elements and melodies that are almost pop-like in their catchiness. However, the four guys’ rebellious spirit is strong and gives each song extra power. “L’Appel du Vide” is a vivid opener that exudes positivity. Combined with well-integrated brass moments, it is a positive start to an album that spreads joy from start to finish.

Other highlights include the pulsating “Escape Our Fate” and the laid-back “Same As Me”, which show a Californian ease without denying reality.

“Fresh Out of the Oven” has a funky vibe. With its dynamic punk rock riffing, this song is a highlight of the album and leads to the anthemic “Expectations”. This throbbing song lives up to expectations, as does the album. Although they are full throttle, Victory Kid never “Lost Control” and move on with “No Brakes”.

The title of the latter reflects Victory Kid’s musical approach. These guys want to have fun and entertain, while also working with lyrics that tackle relevant contemporary topics.

Groove takes centre stage in “Finally Free”, a pumping rocker with great hooks, while an orchestral string arrangement opens “Will Be Gone”. This calmer moment on the album is a melancholic piece that adds a darker dimension to this colourful album.

With “Frequency”, the band returns to fierce punk rock, although the tune also carries a thoughtful spirit. “You’re Alright” brings this colourful and vivid punk rock album to a close, being the powerful finale and superb final chapter of “Catalyst”.

Victory Kid launch with “Catalyst”, a powerful album that strikes the perfect balance between colourful, upbeat melodies, raw power and sharp lyrics. “Catalyst” has the power to turn grey days into vibrant, memorable moments.
