Hailing from Boston, Massachusetts, Final Gasp are a relatively new band. Their debut album, “Mourning Moon” was released in 2023, and now the band is following it up with their second album. “New Day Symptoms” builds on what we heard in 2023, while also showcasing the band’s progression.
This five-piece band plays dark music that fuses several genres. Some gothic influences have found their way into the songs on the latest album. At the same time, there are post-punk elements combined with plenty of rock and metal.
“Eternal Silence” is an intro that leads to “Look Away”. This opener is a direct link to the previous album. Influences from bands like Samhain and Killing Joke are present, and they also guided the band’s direction on their debut album. The Killing Joke influence is even stronger on “The Apparition”.
The more I hear from Final Gasp and their latest album, the more I am reminded of bands like Unto Others. Final Gasp and Portland-based rockers share a dark, gothic vibe that runs through each of their songs.
One of the heaviest tracks on the album is entitled “Prediction”. Post-hardcore and metal are the driving forces behind this song, which builds on heaviness without shying away from a good melody. Ultimately, it is the variety of songs on the album that showcase the band’s next step in development. Even 1970s rock is represented. Listening to the emotional “No Hand to Lead” brings to mind bands like Blue Öyster Cult, while the throbbing “Burials of Birth” reflects post-punk influences.
“Fractures” is a dystopian interlude that acts as an intro to the intense title track, while the heavy-hearted “Pale Sun” marks the melancholic end of the album.
With “New Day Symptoms”, Final Gasp takes a bold step forward. The album showcases the band’s development over the past three years. This sophomore album has the potential to impress some new fans, so let’s watch this ambitious band’s future steps.
