Review ROULETTE “Go!”

Following on from ‘Now!’, the latest Roulette album is called ‘Go!’. The Swedish AOR band, with roots dating back to the mid-1980s, returns with a new album and continues its journey through the world of melodic rock.

Roulette comprises Thomas Lundgren, Magnus Nelin, Hansi Fellbrink and Mats Nelin. The four-piece band launches ten new songs, picking up where they left off with “New!“. Swedes must have a great sense for superb melodies in their genes. The northern country is home to many interesting melodic rock bands, and Roulette’s music fits excellently into this context.

Inspired by the sound of their idols — bands like Thin Lizzy and Def Leppard — the Swedes have recorded music that builds on excellent melody lines and that also reminds me partly of Europe. ‘Strangers’ is such a song, and Roulette have the perfect combination of catchy sounds and a certain level of hardness perfectly under control. Despite being enthusiastic about the well-crafted melodies, the band never descends into triviality. There is always an underlying rock feel that gives upbeat songs like the opener, “Answer to My Prayers”, their drive.

“We Remember You” has a few links to Thin Lizzy, and the grooving bass on “Take Me As I Am” is mesmerizing. Another source of inspiration for the band is Bryan Adams, and the impact of the Canadian rock great can be heard in songs like “Don’t Be Sorry”. The sugary-sweet sound of the keyboard kicks off the almost pop-driven ‘She Can’t Hide’, before ‘Better Walk Away’ brings the album to a close.

Roulette’s new album features ten exciting rock songs. While the melodies are very attractive, the roots of rock are present too. “Go! ” is a laid-back album with light-hearted music that is perfect for sunny summer days. These songs are perfect for having a good time, which we all need once in a while.
