Two bands with impressive development have joined forces and embarked on a European tour. Green Lung and Unto Others are currently on the road with a stop in Hamburg at Gruenspan. Herndon, Virginia rockers Satan’s Satyrs complete the package, and it’s the latter that kicks off the evening with a 30-minute set.
Satan’s Satyrs play a mixture of hard rock and metal with a punk attitude. The four-piece from the USA deliver an energetic show and present songs from their debut as well as from their current longplayer “After Dark”, which forms the middle of the show. The place is already pretty well filled when the guys enter the stage and everyone is waiting for some blasting music. What doesn’t play into the guys’ hands is the sound. The vocals are way in the back and can hardly be heard during the opener. You can assume that there is a guitar solo but you can’t really hear it and the drums are far too present. This mix makes the show not too exciting and there are more than a few guys who decide to pay a visit to the bar. Satan’s Satyrs would have deserved better circumstances fpr their set.

After a rather short changeover it is time for Unto Others. The group, from Portland, Oregon, debuted in 2021 with the album “Mana”, which was the starting point of an impressive rise. The band’s popularity grew with each release and tonight many fans are at Gruenspan just to see the gothic rock/metal heavyweights.
Unto Others have created a setlist of 18 songs and they don’t waste any time. “Butterfly”, the opener of their latest album “Never Neverland”, is the start of a 60-minute set that covers all of the Portland band’s albums. The focus of Unto Others is on the music and not on talking. There are a few moments when frontman Gabriel Franco says a few words to the fans, also referring to their first concert at Bambi Galore in 2019. It is amazing to see the development of the band since then and the fans really appreciate what Unto Others bring to the table tonight. There is the extremely fast “Flatline” and with “Pet Sematary” the band also added a cover version of the Ramones classic to the set. Unto Others deliver what was expected. Melancholic metal with a strong gothic vibe fills the room for an hour and after a finale called “Dragon, Why Do You Cry?” the fans are satisfied and probably could have managed to listen to a few more songs.

The second band that can look back on some exciting years is Green Lung from London, UK. It all started with “Woodland Rites” from 2019, but it was “Black Harvest” from 2021 that marked a turning point in the band’s career. Signing a deal with Svart Records gave the band a platform to reach a wider fanbase and the effect was strengthened when the Brits released their third album “This Heathen Land” in 2023.
That Green Lung have gained some popularity is shown by a rather full room at Gruenspan and that few Unto Others fans have already left the venue doesn’t affect the show of the London rockers.
Fortunately the sound of Unto Others was already good and Green Lung have an even better sound tonight. This benefits “Woodland Rites”, the opener of a show that combines rock and metal. “Lady Lucifer” from the first EP comes quite early in the set and reflects the Sabbathian doom metal influences, while the newer material brings a bit more of a rock sound to the plate. Folk and nature come more to the front with songs like the mesmerizing “Song of the Stones”. Classic rock is what is even stronger now than it was in the beginning, a stunning version of “Oceans of Time” shows this facet of Green Lung’s music.
A Green Lung show means great music and a mystical atmosphere. Just a glance at the stage set shows that this band not only relies on stunning songs, but also pays attention to the visual impact. With a backdrop of mystical creatures that are also part of the stage setup, the spirit of the music is supported and allows Green Lung to provide a holistic experience for their fans. The band from London delivered a great show tonight, underlining why Green Lung is one of the most important newcomer bands. Creativity, versatility and musicality are all there, and there are surely more great years waiting for the band and their fans.
