Review IN THIS MOMENT ‘Godmode’

One of the success factors of In This Moment is certainly the quite impressive live performance. The quintet from California offers its fans not only a series of songs from different albums, but builds on a holistic concept in which audio and visual merge with each other. In This Moment offer an impressive live show and the question arises with every upcoming release, how In The Moment can do without the visual effects.

Three years after the release of ‘Mother’, ‘Godmode’ arrives at the record stores. After the band has changed from Roadrunner Records to BMG, one could be curious whether this is reflected in the sound of the five.

Well, in principle, the band remains true to its successful concept. Expressionistic modern metal, which focuses on singer Maria Brink, is the center of the new output. Together with lead guitarist and founding member Chris Howorth, the band has recorded ten tracks, one of which, ‘I Would Die For YSou’, is already known. The song from the ‘John Wick: Chapter 4’ soundtrack is the special extra and is used in an album version. The moody piece slowly gains strength, but remains a dystopian moment on the album.

The title track kicks things off. It is a gloomy and very rhythm-based start that at the beginning relies on samples, drums and of course Brink’s vocals. The latter counts on a mixture of distorted screams and clear vocals in the chorus. Intensity can not be denied to the piece, but the song does not want to spark immediately and the following ‘The Purge’ goes the same way.

A little more momentum comes with ‘Army of Me’ and it also becomes obvious that ‘Godmode’ is much darker.

Even if ‘Godmode’ is a bit more complex, you get the impression that In The Moment stays true to a certain basic framework and the structure of songs is similar. Even though it’s the details that catch your attention here and there and heaviness bursts through on ‘Sanctify Me’, in the second half of the album one sometimes starts to flirt with the ‘Forward’ button.

‘Godmode’ is certainly not a bad album, however, it can not match ‘Black Widow’. And so the live shows will remain, which will certainly be an experience again and one can look forward to them.
