Review DEFILED ‘The Highest Level’

Japan’s death metal four-piece Defiled have been firing out their riffs since 1992, but it took until 1997 for the guys to throw their debut album ‘Erupted Wrath’ into the ring. Since then the Japanese band has become an established part of the extreme metal scene. Even if there was little to hear between 2003 and 2011, Defiled release murderous riff attacks in regular intervals.

‘The Highest Level’ is the latest strike of the band and what the Japanese quartet hammers in our ears is first class brute death metal. The guys hereby avoid all unnecessary ballast, which is reflected in a song length of about three minutes.

It all starts with ‘Off-Limits’ and as the title indicates, Defiled have released all handbrakes. Deep growls and massive riffing hit your ears and you are caught by a musical tornado, which spits you out again after 43 minutes. Defiled do not necessarily rely on the maximum power of speed. Rather, it is the hellish groove and the massive vocals, which take you into hellish realms.

Then there is the rabid sounding ‘The Status Quo’ followed by the mercilessly hammering ‘Warmonger’.

‘The Highest Level’ knows no breather and no moment of rest. From beginning to end full throttle is applied here and fans of oldschool death metal will have their true joy with these bone crushing riffs.

Often people talk about the Japanese restraint. Well, what the guys from Tokyo deliver on this album is rather the opposite. The brutal death metal they elicit from their instruments and vocal cords is right in your face and lives from an uncompromising musical unrestraint, which breaks its way here.
