Review VOIVOD ‘Ultraman’ – EP – Markus' Heavy Music Blog

Sci-Fi metal creators Voivod are coming up with an unusual EP these days. ‘Ultraman’ is the name of the record and represents fun above all.

During the recording session for ‘Synchro Anarchy’, Voivod also recorded a few songs, which did not end up on the album. These songs are a homage to the Japanese science fiction series ‘Ultraman’, which became famous in the 60s.

The four Canadians decided to give a new face to the opening, closing and victory theme. Voivod have changed little compared to the original versions. However, they have given the three themes a typical Voivod touch and, as mentioned above, it is simply fun to listen to these interpretations.

Since these are themes from a TV series, the tracks are not very long and the opening theme is already ‘lengthy’ with 1.5 minutes running time.

In order not to leave it at a few minutes, Voivod have added two live songs to the EP. ‘Overreaction’ and ‘Voïvod’ are live recordings from 2018 and were captured during the ‘Return to Morgöth’ tour. Both songs capture the live atmosphere well and are also a throwback to the early days of the guys, icluding “Piggy, Piggy, Piggy” chanting fans.

As stated in the beginning, ‘Ultraman’ is definitely more fun than a typical Voivod release. The band celebrates its 40th anniversary this year and this EP should be seen in that context. A little extra for fans and a good bridge to the next studio album.
