It was ‘Wretched and Divine: The Story of the Wild Ones’ that catapulted Black Veil Brides to the top of contemporary hard rock, especially in the USA. Already the predecessor ‘Set the World on Fire’ could achieve considerable results, before the band was on everybody’s lips with their third album.
In Europe, the guys were able to gain a foothold more slowly, but the successes were rather modest compared to the home country.
After the band brought with ‘The Phantom Tomorrow’ their sixth studio album in the record stores last year, it is an EP that offers new songs to the fans. ‘The Mourning’ is the name of the disc and it features four new songs.
It starts off with the smashing alternative metal-like ‘Devil’. The song doesn’t really come across as hellish. Nevertheless, it is a thumping modern metal tune, which is full of energy. Equipped with a solid groove, the song blasts well out of the speakers before an acoustic intro introduces ‘Saviour 2’. The tune quickly gains power and develops into a stadium anthem, which is well done. Black Veil Brides don’t necessarily flirt with innovation when it comes to ‘Saviour 2’. However, the result is worth listening to.
More powerful is ‘The Revival’ before ‘Better Angels’ brings us to the last song of this EP. Black Veil Brides remain true to themselves and their style, also with the final track and release a mini-album, which is well worth listening to, but holds no surprises. The standard formula is successfully applied on ‘The Mourning’, which will please fans but not open the door to new shores.
