One week after Ronnie Romero released an album, full of cover songs, German metal pioneer Udo Dirkschneider presents his newest effort. No doubt, there can be a discussion about sense and nonsense of such an album although I have to say that Dirkschneider’s roaring voice adds a special touch to most of the songs.
Dirkschneider is one of the most respected frontmen in heavy metal. His time with legendary Accept helped to shape heavy metal and his solo outlets U.D.O. and Dirkschneider are part of a solid foundation when it is about German metal.
This time, the singer with the raspy voice, unleashes a metal record that features 17 cover songs. And as usually, these songs influenced the singer over time and now the time was right to show them with a new appeal. The choice of classics features ‘T.N.T.’ from AC/DC as well as Judas Priest, Queen and others. Even ‘They Call it Nutbush’ from Tina Turner was Udo-lized and the same goes for the great ‘Faith Healer, originally by Alex Harvey. Regarding the latter, the stellar cover version from The Bollock Brothers stays untouched.
There is not that much more to tell about the album. Dirkschneider fans will love what they get offered with ‘My Way’, an album that showcases a singer who follows his own metal compass and had always success while listening to his metal heart. If a Udo Dirkschneider album with cover versions was something the world was waiting for can be questioned. However, ‘My Way’ is entertaining, songs are great, and some fans of the original version might be a bit shocked when listening to Dirkschneider hard and heavy interpretation.
